The farm provides over 50 types of fresh organic
vegetables for 14 weeks from late June until mid September. Our members are welcome to visit their farm and see where their food comes from and how it is grown. It is our desire to expand our season and storage facilities incrementally until we can provide for our members the whole year round, thus ensuring that our membership is food secure 365 days of the year. This is the overall goal for Boreal Edge Farm, and one we look forward to working towards every year with our members. Our farm practices organic agriculture, increasing the fertility of our land every year while growing healthy and safe food (see Farm Fresh Vegetables) We
also include items from other local farmers and a bakery in our weekly boxes
(see Partners). This helps other small
growers build the viability of their operation and strengthens local food
production in the Thunder Bay Area. CSA
farms are a creative method to keep small farms viable.
What Does the CSA Provide?
Our summer share provides a good quantity of the freshest vegetables every week. Our produce is harvested the night before and morning of delivery day, which means you receive the freshest, most flavorful food possible, every week. How many people it might be expected to feed varies depending on your personal veggie eating habits.
To illustrate this a little better, take a look at the following blog posts:
July:

August:

September:
http://borealedgefarm.blogspot.com/2009/09/10th-csa-drop.htmlOf course every week is different, and there are changes month to month as well. Some boxes will have a little more, others a little less, but this represents an average.
About half of our members are non-vegetarian families (2 adults, 2 children) and they find this is a perfect amount for a weeks fresh vegetables.
Seasonal Changes:
As the
seasons change, the vegetables you receive will change too:

For more on what we grow and how, see our Vegetables section.
Other vegetables will also be available throughout the year as we
continue to experiment with new varieties and extending our season.
After
receiving your payment we will add you to our members list. We start growing our transplants and
preparing the garden beds in late April in preparation for the summer growing
season. When the garden is in production
we fill each member’s box with an assortment of fresh vegetables, 8 to
10 different varieties each week. Delivery begins in late June/early July.
Delivery: 2010 season our farm van/truck will come to a central drop off point (TBA) on Wednesday evenings, where our members can come and pick up their share. Remember to bring a bag or box to carry your veggies away in. We have chosen Wednesday to accommodate the largest number of people possible because it falls in the middle of the week and won't complicate weekends, going to camp, out of town etc.
Here's the 2010 Options and Pricing list!
We are accepting new members while spaces last for 2010!
